Yorkshire Terriers - Dogs - Breed Description

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat is long and silky. The hair is very long on the head and back, a distinctive parting running from top of the head and down the back toward the croup. The body and the tail are metallic blue, and the head, muzzle, chest, belly and legs are tan. It is better to keep the hair on the head banded, because it may fall over eyes and block vision, or be a nuisance when feeding.

The ears are erect or semi-erect and hairy, and the eyes are infinitely vivid and eager. The hair on the back falls straight down on either side of the parting. The tail is carried level, and it is usually docked half its initial length. Puppies are born black, which tends to slowly transform into steel blue as the dog ages.

Yorkshire Terries genetic pool contains many Terrier breeds. They are as lively, brave and self-assured as they are tiny, and they demand the respect of a large dog. If attacked, over-teased or frightened, they turn aggressive and snappish. Yorkshire Terriers are excellent watchdogs, and this ability does reflect their previous designation as rat-catchers.
